CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation: The Tampa Owner’s Guide
We stock and install CertainTeed-compatible ridge vent systems across Tampa, with most installations running between $450 and $900 depending on linear footage, roof pitch, and how much of the old vent needs to come out first. If your ridge vent is cracked, peeling, leaking, or you’re seeing granules collecting in your gutters after every storm, the vent has likely reached the end of its life. Most Tampa homeowners discover the failure two ways: a water stain on the ceiling near an exterior wall, or a roofer pointing at the ridge during a routine inspection and saying the plastic has gone brittle in the heat.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
CertainTeed makes two ridge vent lines we regularly work with in Tampa: the ShingleVent II and the RidgeFlex series. The ShingleVent II is a rigid plastic vent with an external baffle, designed for use with CertainTeed’s architectural shingles like Landmark and NorthGate. The RidgeFlex is a flexible, lower-profile option that rolls across the ridge and is often specified for the lower-slope roofs you see in older Tampa neighborhoods like Seminole Heights or Ballast Point.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know: the RidgeFlex profile is noticeably thinner than the ShingleVent II, and contractors sometimes install whichever one is on the truck, even if it doesn’t match the original ventilation math for your attic. If your roof was built with ShingleVent II and someone swapped in RidgeFlex later, your attic, which already fights Tampa’s humidity and heat, could be under-ventilated. We measure every existing vent and match the replacement by profile height and CFM rating, not just by brand. For OEM parts, we order direct through CertainTeed supply channels. For aftermarket, we use vent material spec-matched to CertainTeed dimensions, and we’ll tell you before installation which one you’re getting and why.

Signs Your CertainTeed Ridge Vent Installation Is Failing
- Cracks along the vent body. Years of Tampa sun break down the plastic. The ShingleVent II gets brittle first near the nail line, and once the cracks start, water works through and follows the truss. The cause: UV exposure cycles, usually after 10-14 years in Florida.
- Granules building up in gutters near the ridge. That’s shingle material, but it often means the ridge cap shingles over the vent are wearing faster because the vent underneath wasn’t sealed correctly. The cause: poor adhesion between cap shingles and vent base or original underlayment has failed.
- Visible daylight through the ridge from inside the attic. Climb up with a flashlight. If you see slivers of light at the ridge, the baffle has warped or cracked. The cause: heat distortion, and it means the vent is no longer shedding rain properly.
- Attic temperature jumps after a summer storm. Ridge vent that’s clogged with dust or insulation can’t exhaust. When it gets wet and hot, Tampa’s humidity cooks the attic. The cause: ventilation blocked, often from blown-in insulation that drifted over the soffit or ridge path.
- Peeling paint or musty smell in rooms along the exterior walls. This points to condensation buildup because the attic isn’t moving air. The cause: failed ridge vent, but also possibly undersized for the roof area.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For the Tampa market, plan on $450 to $900 for a full ridge vent replacement on a standard single-story home, including material removal and disposal. Longer ridge lines, the steeper pitches around Davis Islands, or second-story work from an access standpoint push toward the higher end. If we’re just repairing a section, like replacing a broken ten-foot run, that’s often $180 to $350.
What’s included with Birchbark: removal of the old vent, inspection of the decking underneath, installation of the new CertainTeed-compatible vent, ridge cap shingles matched to whatever is up there, and all debris cleared. You get a written price before any work starts, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise applies: if the work isn’t right, we make it right. Like Erik Lindgren says: “A written price before the first nail, that is just how the job starts.”
DIY or Call Us?
There are a couple of things you can safely check yourself from the ground: whether the vent cap looks torn or lifted after a storm, and whether you see granules concentrating below the ridge line in the gutters. You can also peek in the attic with a flashlight and check for daylight or water staining.
Climbing on a Tampa roof in July with a ridge vent in your hand is a different conversation. The heat makes the roof surface dangerously hot, and ridge installations require working at the highest point of the house with nails, sealant, and cap shingles. One wrong step or an unsealed vent and you’re dealing with a leak that travels. This is not a spring-loaded component like a garage door, but it is a roof-penetrating one at the weatherline of the home. Our crews are background-checked, uniformed, and we use shoe covers and drop cloths through the house, with a clean-up photo before we leave. Call (850) 600-8577 and we’ll get you scheduled for a free estimate.
FAQs
Expect 10 to 15 years in Tampa’s climate before UV and storm heat degrade the vent, which is shorter than what you’d see north of Georgia. We stock material on the truck, so replacements usually happen in one visit. Call (850) 600-8577 for a free estimate.
It depends on how much of the run is compromised. We often repair sections under ten feet, but once cracks spread across multiple shingle courses, a full replacement is more cost-effective. We’ll show you photos and give you a written price either way before work starts.
Yes. We carry CertainTeed ShingleVent II and RidgeFlex-compatible profiles, plus cap shingle colors to match. GAF and Owens Corning equivalents are available if that’s what your roof was originally built with.
Most ridge vent replacements run three to five hours on a single-story home from setup to final clean-up, with the work finished same-day unless the decking underneath reveals damage. We’ll photograph the cleanup before we leave.
